Artist Statement
My reason for making art is pretty simple. It brings me joy. I believe one of my gifts is the desire and the ability to express with my hands and heart the beauty I see around me.
A number of years ago I read Anne Morrow Lindberg's A Gift from the Sea. I've been working with a couple of images since then, inspired by that book and by the organic nature of Georgia O'Keefe's paintings. I love working with shellforms, because of my love for the ocean but also because of the appeal of the spiral as a basic element of life form and construction. The shellforms evolved as a feminine analogy, a celebration of woman. The birdforms and the butterflies both developed further from the idea of feminine analogy, then moved to the idea of growth and transformation. You might notice that my site holds a number of different art mediums. People I've known have told me that I should focus on one medium and really push it and perfect it. That seems quite limiting to me. and not nearly as much fun. So I exress myself with whatever medium appeals to me at a given moment. In all the different media though, the organic fluid lines come through.
In the past few years, I've been so busy with my "day job" that I have less time to make art. Most of my photos have been in that recent time since photography is an art form you can do incidental to another activity. When I fly on business trips one of my favorite activities is taking aerial shots from the airplane window. I think next I may try painting some of the beautiful aerial abstractions I've seen. I also love playing with and photgraphing bubbles. Their beauty and individuality awes me, and I never tire of the endless light play I find in them.
